The Goal Isn’t More Movement. The Goal Is Better Movement.
Just because you have a body doesn’t mean you understand how it works.
Think about the home you live in. You wake up there every morning. You go to sleep there every night. You know where everything is. But do you actually know how your home works?
Do you know how the plumbing is routed behind the walls? How the electrical wiring is connected? How the Wi-Fi reaches every room? Or how the architect and engineers designed the building so it can withstand years of wind, rain, and shifting ground without collapsing?
Probably not.
You live there every day, yet most of what keeps it functioning is completely invisible to you.
Your body is no different.
You live in it every second of every day, yet most people have never been taught how it actually works. That’s not a criticism—it’s simply the reality. We aren’t taught movement, posture, breathing, or biomechanics in school. So it’s completely understandable that most people don’t know what their joints, muscles, and nervous system are actually supposed to be doing.
Then we walk into a gym.
We’re surrounded by machines we don’t fully understand, exercises we’ve seen other people do, and workout videos telling us to do more reps, lift more weight, or push harder.
But no one stops to explain how the movement is supposed to happen.
Proper exercise isn’t just about completing a movement. It’s about where the movement starts, where it finishes, which muscles are meant to create it, how your joints should be positioned, how your breathing supports it, and how your body transfers force from one area to another.
Performing an exercise with poor mechanics can actually be more damaging than skipping the exercise altogether. Poor mechanics aren’t a reflection of intelligence or effort—they’re usually the result of never having been taught what good movement actually feels like.
Someone may show you what exercise to do, but not how to do it. They may never explain when to breathe (generally exhaling during the effort, as the working muscles contract), how to stabilize the parts of your body that aren’t moving, or how to create a solid foundation so the muscles you’re trying to strengthen can do their job. Without those fundamentals, every repetition reinforces the same inefficient movement pattern. Over time, those repeated patterns place unnecessary stress on your body, and that’s when pain and overuse injuries begin to develop.
The same thing happens with something as basic as walking.
Most people assume walking is automatic, but modern life has changed the way we move. Hours of sitting leave our hips stiff, our connective tissues less mobile, our muscles less responsive, and our bodies less prepared for movement.
When the hips become tight, the leg often can’t extend fully behind the body during each step. That may seem like a small change, but it’s incredibly important. That final part of the stride is where the glute muscles should naturally engage to propel you forward.
When the leg never reaches that position, the glutes contribute less than they should. Other muscles begin compensating, the lower back often works harder, and over time inefficient movement patterns become normal.
Weak glutes and reduced hip extension are two of the most common movement patterns associated with ongoing low back pain. The back isn’t always the problem—it’s often the structure that’s compensating for something else.
This is why more movement isn’t always the answer.
The goal isn’t simply to move more.
The goal is to move better.
When you understand how your body was designed to move, exercise stops being something that slowly wears you down and starts becoming something that builds you up.
When you control where a movement starts and where it ends, your muscles do the work they were designed to do.
And when your muscles do the work, your joints don’t have to.
That’s when movement becomes sustainable.
That’s when exercise starts building you up instead of slowly breaking you down.
